Philip Gossett, a musicologist, died on June 12, 2017, at his home in Chicago.
I referred to many of his papers on Verdi’s opera in Risorgimento when I wrote my paper on “Rethinking Verdi’s Risorgimento Opera: beyond the gap between politico-cultural and musicological perspectives” published in Yonsei Collection of Papers in 2014.
I always have wondered about him, but it is unfortunate and even an ironical thing to happen that I get to know about him by the memorial article.
His writings were the paragon of writing which can demonstrate how a musicologist researches and writes, and I discovered the joy of reading whenever I read his articles.
I lament the death of him.
